Alternate: Karl Meier
Age 51. Growing up in Whitecourt AB, Karl was active in Track & Field. He
curled up to 1985 when an ATV accident left him a paraplegic. Proud of the
fact his last curling was at a Bonspiel in Slave Lake. He has tried
Wheelchair sports of Sledge Hockey, Basketball and Tennis. On National
Teams for Disabled Cross Country Skiing and Shooting. Has competed in
Norway for Skiing and also at the Games of the Americas in Shooting. Has
won 4 Team Medals for Shooting. In his first year in the Calgary League.
Lead: Bridget Wilson
Age 42. Originally from Saskatchewan, she was a Junior Curling until a MVA
in 1979 left her a Tetraplegic. Bridget initiated the movement to get
Wheelchair Curling in Alberta and now serves on the local Executive. Has
won a silver medal in Canadian Table Tennis, and bronze in Quad Rugby
Playdowns. Other wheelchair sports include Sailing, Air Rifle and Downhill
Skiing. Treasurer of Calgary League.
Second: Anne Hibberd
Age 42. Originally from NSW Australia, she was never active in sports as a
young person. MVA in 1994 resulted in Paraplegia. The Salt Lake Games
sparked Anne’s interest in curling. Now in 2nd year of curling in Calgary
and is President of the Calgary Wheelchair Curling League.
Third: Robert Johns
Age 64. Originally from Zelma, Saskatchewan, Bob was involved in Cross
Country Running and Nordic Skiing. He was involved in curling just in a
recreation capacity. In 1985, Bob had a severe stoke which limited some
activities. After 35 years teaching in the Arctic, Bob retired to Calgary
in 1999. He joined the Calgary League two years ago and serves as Secretary
on Local Executive.
Skip: Bruno Yizek
Age 57, Bruno hailed originally from Cardston Alberta and was very active in
recreational curling for 19 years. He was also in Commercial Fastball and
Golf. In 1991, Bruno developed a benign spinal chord tumour which left him
as a paraplegic. He has tried Wheelchair tennis and Sailing but prefers
Curling. Serves as VP of the local League.
Coach: Ernie Comerford
Age 64. Ottawa native but spent 28 years in Arctic as a teacher and
Political Assistant. Active in many sports throughout life especially
fastball and curling. Coached 4 different teams to 5 Canadian Junior
Curling Championships. Retired to Calgary in 1997 and is active in Coaching
High Performance Adults and Juniors. He is a Provincial Course Conductor
and also a Professional Curling Instructor in Calgary. Passionate about the
sport with youngsters. Hooked now on possibilities of this aspect of the
sport.
