BC win the 12th Canadian National
Wheelchair Curling Championship

BRITISH COLUMBIA
Gerry Austgarden, Darryl Neighbour, Frank Labounty, Alison Duddy

Wrap up

British Columbia, the most experienced and most decorated of the ten provincial teams competing in the 2012 national championships, demolished Quebec's hopes of a home field title, beating their hosts 11-1 in a very lop-sided final.

BC. skipped by Gerry Austgarden, with Darryl Neighbour, Frank LaBounty and Alison Duddy built their win on Duddy's excellent lead play. Her front stones and draws into the rings were never answered. Failure to clear the front was just one of the issues that Quebec will look back on, though none of the team shot well as the deficit grew. At 3-1 down towards the end of the 4th end, Quebec chose not to split the house for skip's stones, and with last rock threw a take out of a BC biter back 12 for the blank, when they could have pulled within one with a draw going into the break. It was downhill from there; a huge disappointment for a team that with just one loss, led the field after round robin play.

Earlier in the day, Manitoba showed their lack of class by insisting on beginning the 8th end of their semi-final against BC even though trailing by 7.

The 12 Canadian Nationals begin April  27th at the Centra de Curling in Boucherville, QC, the same location as last year. National Championships are notoriously difficult to arrange venues that can cope with the accommodation and transportation needs of up to 50 wheelchair using athletes for a week long tournament. This event takes place weeks after many venues across the country will have closed for the season.

Dennis Thiessen, now an established member of Canada's national team, returns with an unchanged Manitoba team to defend their title. Runners-up Quebec's hopes of a second national title, this time on home ice, will not have been improved by the absence of
Sébastien Boisvert.

BC are the most decorated squad, boasting two Paralympian gold medallists and seven national gold medals. Skip Gerry Austgarden returns to the Nationals for the first time since 2006, the last time Team Canada competed in the event.

Ontario's Chris Rees and 3rd Carl Bax hope it will be 5th time lucky but will face the same problem all light-weight hitting quads face - how to clear trouble without an up-weight take-out available for your last two stones.

Edmonton's Team  Kuchelyma finally dislodged Calgary based Team Smart, ending the Calgary monopoly of provincial representation since Alberta joined the championship in 2006.

Newfoundland and Labrador have added a second male, alternate Mel Fitzgerald, for the first time since 2008. Saskatchewan skip Darwin Bender, on nobody's radar when he won in 2012, will have Team Canada's newest member, Marie Wright, at 2nd.

One of the game's perfect gentleman, Wayne Ficek, returns to skip Northern Ontario and Mike Fitzgerald returns with his second year New Brunswick team that will have built on last year's rookie experience. Nova Scotia lost George Horning to illness and Trendal (Hubbly-Bubbly) Hubley-Bolivar returns as skip.

Who will win? My guess is it's between unchanged Manitoba, especially if they can drop the surliness and at least look like they're enjoying themselves, and the very experienced BC team. There will be no one more motivated than Gerry Austgarden who, I am sure, feels he has something to prove to the Team Canada coaches. If 3rd Darryl Neighbour has recovered from various medical issues, then they will be tough to beat.

Quebec may struggle without Boisvert, and Saskatchewan, even with Marie Wright, can only hope that lightning strikes twice in their lifetime.

There have only been four provinces (BC 4, MB 2, QC, SK) who have won national tiles. I don't expect that to change.
